Two important events in recent days have given rise to optimism about the strengthening of cooperation in the Eurasia region and the development of relations between Iran and Russia.

The Iran-Russia Joint Economic Commission meeting in Tehran and the regional security meeting in Tajikistan, which was attended by the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, were held successfully and coincided with the commission’s announcement of good news for the development of cooperation between the two countries.
During a meeting between Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and his Russian counterpart in Tajikistan, Shamkhani stressed the need to establish strategic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow to counter the US unilateral policies and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
Relations between Iran and Russia are strategic. Russia is Iran’s most important and largest neighbor, while Iran is of great importance for Russia due to its natural resources and its excellent geographical position that plays the role of a bridge between Asia, Europe and Africa.

In the current situation in which both countries are under sanctions imposed by the United States and Western countries, naturally, greater capacities for cooperation are being created.
One of the most important of these capacities is the privileged position of Iran and Russia in the important region of Eurasia, which stretches from China to Europe, via Turkey.
The future of the world’s economy is said to be in Eurasia, which accounts for about 60 percent of the world’s population and about 40 percent of the world’s natural resources, including oil and gas. In addition, the world’s two nuclear powers, Russia and China, which are also permanent members of the veto-wielding UN Security Council, are located in this region.
With these capacities, relations between Iran and Russia will surely have a bright future; the two countries can have extensive cooperation in economic areas such as trade and transit, as well as security areas such as the fight against terrorism. This will be in favor of the two countries as well as other states in the region.
The security summit in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, was also an opportunity for the countries of the region to hold further consultations in order to strengthen cooperation.
All the countries of the Eurasian region look to the future of relations between Iran and Russia, and its effects on the whole region. Now, the West’s unilateral sanctions on both countries have further increased Tehran-Moscow motives to develop bilateral and regional cooperation and proved that sanctions have lost their effectiveness.
The world today has come to the conclusion that the great powers cannot achieve their goals with the weapon of sanctions. About 22 countries are currently subject to various sanctions by the US and the West, but sanctions have not been able to stop these countries from pursuing their goals and interests.

Sanctions on Russia will not be effective either. Russia will pass this stage by using relations with its neighbors in the region, as well as Iran, which has its own experience in managing sanctions. Therefore, sanctions will not only not hinder the development of cooperation between Iran and Russia, but will accelerate it and at the same time pave the way for bringing forward new proposals and initiatives. If Russia’s proposal to use the national currency in trade relations between the countries of the Eurasia region, and especially the member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, is implemented, it will surely lead to the weakening of the dollar and strengthening of the national currencies in the region. Thus, sanctions have strengthened the motives to develop cooperation between Iran and Russia. Meanwhile, the West’s propaganda and its media cannot disrupt these
relations.
